Meet Karen Print E-mail

Karen Ialapi, RD, LD, CDE, is a registered dietitian, certified diabetes educator, wellness coach, freelance writer, artist and culinary enthusiast.  She is the founder and owner of Pure Sustenance, a nutrition and wellness coaching business.

A unique philosophy combined with a multi-dimensional approach and a diverse background are Karen’s recipe for success.  She blends 20 years of experience in the field of nutrition and health promotion with her clinical expertise, behavior skills, food and product knowledge, creativity, and zest for wholeness . . . around food and life.

Karen earned her BS in Nutrition and Dietetics from Michigan State University in 1986.  She completed her dietetic internship at Methodist Hospital of Indianapolis in 1987 and  is licensed in both Missouri and Kansas.  She has worked in the multiple dimensions of wellness and disease state management and is adept in the pathophysiology of the body with advanced training in weight issues, diabetes, natural foods, mind body nutrition, metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular disease.   Karen has completed intensive, intermediate and advanced training for the treatment of dysfunctional eating. 

Various media including radio, television and print; have interviewed Karen as a spokesperson for nutrition and health,.  She has been a guest on National Public Radio’s Walt Bodine Show.  She has written articles and presented to diverse audiences, including medical professionals, community groups and local corporations such as the City of Kansas City Employees, Lathrop & Gage, Fortis, Missouri Bank, Gererali USA and American Century.

ImageFood is Karen’s second language and creative outlet.  She is at home in a kitchen, grocery store, or farmer’s market.  She has gained hands-on culinary experience from her family and by working in professional kitchens and bakeries.  She further enhanced her knowledge of natural food and environmental responsibility by working in customer service at Whole Foods Market.
She provides nutrition and wellness consulting at the Sastun Center for Integrative Health Care in Overland Park, Kansas, and to local corporations.   Karen is entering her third year as a member of the Program Planning Committee for the House of Menuha, a non-profit organization that provides a nurturing environment for women to rest, reflect, and renew.

Karen lives in Overland Park, Kansas where she feeds her whole self with art, cooking, Krav Maga (a martial art), nature, family, close friendships, her dog Bella, and of course, eating well.
